VISA
Before anything else, it is crucial to learn about the prerequisites for the Canadian PR visa. Housing can be challenge, especially if you don’t have any friends or relatives in Canada. For my initial few months in Toronto, I stayed in this colonial architecture house in downtown Toronto, which I found via air bnb. I had my own room with separate washroom and the landlord was a very warm lady. I remember that she arranged a dinner meal for all occupants once a week where we all gathered and spoke about what the week was like. Although very comfortable, this accommodation type is for short term stay, like a few months at most. In these initial months you can survey the area you would like to live in, choose rented options as per your budgets and get into a long term contract.
Weather
Canada is a huge country and weather would vary depending upon where you decide to live (ranging -20 degree in some part of the country). One thing is for sure, it is not going to be very warm. I remember that I’d packed a down jacket for my stay in Toronto, thinking we would use it in the winter months. Jobs
Although job search & opportunities depend on the industry you work in and their respective demand in Canada. According to me, some of the high in-demand industries are Banking, IT, Hospitality and Healthcare. Regardless of the industry, sooner or later, you would come across the classic first time immigrant dilemma in your job hunt, i.e. one needs “relevant Canadian work experience” for a job in your desired industry and for the relevant Canadian work experience you either need Canadian education or at least some general Canadian work experience. It might take some time to find the ideal job, but it is very helpful to get a “survival job” in the meantime. This job could be at any coffee shop or a retail store. Such jobs not only pay well and support your day to day expenses but also keep you engaged. You can also work full time or half time depending on your preference and can search for your ideal job. This way you don’t eat up your saving while looking for the most suited job.
As I mentioned earlier, the decision to move to Canada is a personal call and there are many more things to consider before you take the plunge. My impression of the country has been pleasant.
